Innovation Nexus recognised for excellence in supporting life science businesses

Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network (GM AHSN) has been honoured with Bionow’s 2016 Business Services Award for  its Innovation Nexus service which provides healthcare SMEs with and advice and support to help them introduce their innovative solutions to the NHS.

The Innovation Nexus provides a single point of access for SMEs in the life science sector to a network of specialist support within Greater Manchester. It acts as a gateway between commercial innovators and key decision makers in the NHS and business support organisations, such as TRUSTECH and the Business Growth Hub; however the key part of the success of the Innovation Nexus is that its focus remains on the individual needs of a company.

The 15th annual Bionow Awards were held on 24th November 2016. They celebrate the best achievements in the life science sector in the North of England.

Developed to help GM AHSN deliver long-term health and wealth benefits to Greater Manchester, the Innovation Nexus supports SMEs that operate (or are interested in operating) in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and East Cheshire. SMEs with solutions centred around GM AHSN’s priority areas of cardiovascular health, patient safety and digital health/informatics will fit the eligibility criteria perfectly, although those with innovative solutions outside of these areas are also encouraged to apply as the overarching aim remains to improve health outcomes for the local population.

At the time of the award, 265 companies had received support since the Innovation Nexus was launched just over two years ago in October 2014.

Two companies that have recently benefited from the Innovation Nexus are Humedics and U-Drain. Here are their stories.

Humedics is a Berlin-based company who specialise in instant and exact liver function measurement to help monitor and improve outcomes for patients undergoing liver surgery or receiving oncological therapy. The company are seeking to expand their global operation and identified Manchester as a key location to access the NHS. Through the Innovation Nexus, Humedics were introduced to The MedTECH Centre, where they established a local base and the company is currently engaging with a number of Greater Manchester NHS Trusts with a view to conducting a clinical study of their technology.

U-Drain is an SME based Greater Manchester. Their unique home drainage system offers patients on automated peritoneal dialysis a more friendly and efficient method of fluid disposal. Innovation Nexus has helped the company to secure funding to carry out an evaluation of their technology with a Greater Manchester NHS Trust.

Dr Linda Magee, Executive Director of Industry and Wealth at GM AHSN, was at the award ceremony to collect the award. Linda, who is responsible for ensuring the success of the Innovation Nexus, said:

“There are lots of innovations born out of SMEs that have the capacity to impact profoundly on the health and wellbeing of patients. Unfortunately access to, and navigating the life science market is complex and challenging. This is where the Innovation Nexus can help.

Although only two-years old, we have already had some great successes and we are elated to have won this award”.
