The challenges we face

Companies, especially SMEs, can face significant challenges to introduce their new and innovative products into the NHS. The complexity of public procurement, patient safety and a risk averse culture across multiple organisations can be daunting. The Innovation Nexus aims to provide a single source of resource that can help companies, particularly SMEs, understand the steps that need to be taken to support their business planning and engage with the NHS more easily, thus progressing the adoption of their innovation at pace and with fewer unanticipated obstacles.

Supporting a digital solution to diabetes foot health

Entec Health Ltd, a Surrey-based healthcare innovation company, has successfully engaged via GM AHSN’s Innovation Nexus with two lead clinicians at Central Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust (CMFT).

Entec’s Silhouette® product enables rapid escalation and de-escalation of patients with diabetic foot ulcers to and from secondary care, and increases accuracy and objectivity of assessments through use of 3D wound imaging technology. This will reduce the number of follow-up appointments taking place in hospitals, by enabling remote review of patients’ wounds in their community.

Following a market research and engagement programme commissioned by Entec Health in the GM region during June to Sept 2014, Entec were supported with funding from GM through the now renamed Momentum  funding scheme   The GM  funding support looks to enable joint-development of smarter business processes so that a way to initiate fast-track investment decisions for the Silhouette innovation can be developed, by NHS Trusts within the GM region.

Our colleagues at East Midlands AHSN are also supporting this innovation, working with Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Derbyshire Community Healthcare Services NHS Foundation Trust, Entec Health Ltd and Aranz Medical Ltd to implement the Silhouette® 3D wound imaging system as part of an integrated pathway across both primary and secondary care. EMAHSN assisted with the procurement of the system and worked with all partners to get the new pathway implemented in four settings following an Innovation Exchange event.
