The Greater Manchester Region

Together Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and East Cheshire have a widely acknowledged reputation as an excellent region in which to do business, boasting a global presence with many international corporations already established in the area. The northwest of England has one of the UK's top three clusters for the biomedical sector, which includes biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare. There are several major pharmaceutical companies in the region and internationally renowned academic and clinical research establishments. The northwest is home to some 230 biomedical companies employing 25,000 people.

In particular, the GM AHSN footprint contains a wealth of academic, clinical and industry expertise with a range of established networks supporting the translation of research into policy and practice. Greater Manchester’s unique assets include the largest national provider of health and social care (Salford); the UK’s largest medical school (Manchester); the first equivalent of a primary care teaching hospital (Bolton One); and the largest life sciences commercial R&D site of its kind at Alderley Park (East Cheshire).

Academic links and networks

Greater Manchester initiates and hosts world leading health sciences research. As a region its stable and diverse resident communities, mature academic and health service collaborations and health informatics infrastructure have already attracted many companies to develop and test new products and ideas.

Manchester hosts the North of England’s only NIHR accredited Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), the Greater Manchester NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (NIHR CLAHRC) and an NIHR Biomedical Research Unit (the Manchester Musculoskeletal BRU). These organisations capitalise on the dynamic relationship between the Universities and NHS partners in the region.

Manchester’s strength in health informatics includes the mHealth Ecosystem, NorthWest EHealth (NWEH) and the Heath e-Research Centre (HeRC).
