The challenges we face
Companies, especially SMEs, can face significant challenges to introduce their new and innovative products into the NHS. The complexity of public procurement, patient safety and a risk averse culture across multiple organisations can be daunting. The Innovation Nexus aims to provide a single source of resource that can help companies, particularly SMEs, understand the steps that need to be taken to support their business planning and engage with the NHS more easily, thus progressing the adoption of their innovation at pace and with fewer unanticipated obstacles.

Innovation Nexus support Med-Tech companies move to Manchester
Innovation Nexus has supported several med-tech companies to open offices and laboratories in the North West over the last few months.
Rightly known as the ‘Knowledge Quarter’ or “Innovation hub’, Manchester has proven to be an attractive location for the science sector, as it has built a solid healthcare infrastructure with investment – and could be all the more attractive now as the result of the devolved NHS budget powers.
The region is in one of the top three groups for the biomedical sector, which includes biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare. With around 230 biomed companies employing 25,000 people there is no wonder then, that many are making the move to Manchester, with its offerings on support, funding and collaboration.
Innovation Nexus supported Zilico from Sheffield when it opened its office in Manchester Science Partnerships' Central campus; the company went on to secure a contract with the NHS for its ZedScan™ cervical neoplasia detection system.
Congenica from Cambridge were also supported (by the GM AHSN-led initiative and the city council) to open a Manchester office, and received access to finance from the Corridor Growth Fund.
Both corporations and SMEs looking to expand have a wide selection of suitable properties to choose from, with access not only to office space but laboratory facilities and meeting rooms:
- Citylabs, Manchester
- Alderley Park, Cheshire
- Medipark, Manchester
Manchester also has business incubator space for start-ups:
- The MedTECH Centre Incubator at Manchester Science Partnerships
- Innospace at Manchester Metropolitan University
- The University of Salford’s business incubator Origin
- The Manchester Incubator Building at the University of Manchester
